Oral Health Assessment with Wisdom Teeth Removal in Union, NJ
Wisdom teeth are the third molars in the very back of your mouth. They can cause problems if they are not growing in properly. We provide advanced state-of-the-art oral surgery and wisdom teeth removal.
Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars. They come in anywhere between the ages of 17 to 25 and are known to cause issues with many patients’ oral health. We can visually examine your wisdom teeth (if they have already erupted) or use X-ray imaging to assess if your wisdom teeth need to be removed.
Wisdom teeth removal is considered a category of oral surgery and they can be removed by your dentist or an oral surgeon. The procedure can also be done in your dentist’s office or surgeon’s office. Wisdom teeth removal usually requires a general anesthetic, especially if you are having more than one wisdom tooth pulled at the same time.
How do I know if my wisdom teeth need to be removed?
While every patient is different, there are some common signs that indicate the need to have your wisdom teeth removed. These signs include:
- Impaction, i.e., if the tooth is stuck under the gums or is completely hidden. If wisdom teeth aren’t able to emerge normally, they can become trapped within your jaw which can result in infection or cause a cyst that can damage other teeth or roots.
- Changing bite alignment—wisdom teeth can grow at various angles in the jaw, sometimes horizontally, this can cause a change in your bit alignment.
- Crowding or damage to existing teeth caused by wisdom teeth not having enough room to come in properly.
- Emerging only partially—if your wisdom teeth are only partially emerged through the gums it can cause a magnet for bacteria that can cause gum disease and oral infection.
How can I get relief from wisdom tooth pain?
As wisdom teeth grow up through your jawbone and begin to break through your gum line, they may become inflamed or bleed. This can cause headaches or tooth pain. Here are some remedies to relieve wisdom tooth pain:
- Rinse with Saltwater: Rinsing with saltwater can help reduce inflammation and promote healing by keeping the area clean. The saline solution works as an antibacterial agent, preventing infection and soothing irritated gums. Simply dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out.
- Use Peppermint Essential Oils or Clover Oil to Soothe Pain: Peppermint essential oil has natural numbing properties that can provide relief from tooth pain. Apply a few drops to a cotton ball and gently dab it on the affected area. Clove oil, known for its analgesic and antibacterial properties, can also be used similarly. It contains eugenol, which acts as a natural anesthetic, offering quick pain relief and reducing inflammation.
- Take Aspirin or an Over the Counter Pain Reliever: Over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen can effectively manage wisdom tooth pain. These medications help reduce inflammation and alleviate discomfort. It's important to follow the dosage instructions on the package and consult a healthcare professional if you have any underlying conditions or are taking other medications.
- Apply an Ice Pack or Heating Pad to Your Cheeks: Applying an ice pack to your cheeks can help numb the area and reduce swelling, providing temporary relief from pain. Hold the ice pack against your cheek for 15-20 minutes at a time, with breaks in between to avoid skin damage. Alternatively, a heating pad can be used to relax tense muscles and improve blood circulation, which may also help ease discomfort. Use the heating pad for short intervals, ensuring it's not too hot to avoid burns.
